Biblical Classical Education

Biblical Classical Education, Biblical Classical Community, Principle Approach

Biblical Classical Education is an enriching and rewarding way of learning because students learn how to think Biblically and love learning for the glory of God. Students learn facts, for sure. However, they are also given the tools they need for turning to God’s Word to find principles from which to reason.

The Value of Reflecting on Biblical Truths

Biblical Classical Education is reflective teaching and learning. This means that the teachers prepare lessons for students that feed them the Truths of God’s Word in each subject. We learn how to see life through a providential worldview lens. There are questions related to the Biblical principles and the subject for them to think through. This time of reflection makes the following a priority:

  • seeking God
  • pursuing His ways
  • learning from the Holy Spirit
  • forming Biblical convictions in all spheres of life
  • developing character
  • renewing the mind
  • reaching the heart

This form of education in America is tried and true. It draws us closer to God. It builds our personal relationships with Him.

Christ is the Foundation of Biblical Classical Lessons

The Puritan Founders of Harvard said: “Let every student be plainly instructed, and earnestly pressed…to lay Christ at the bottom as the only Foundation of all sound knowledge and learning.” Historically, that is how education looked in America—a Biblical framework for each sphere of life and learning. That is known as Biblical Classical education.

Additionally, Scripture teaches us:

“. . . no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.” 1 Cor. 3:11

And it teaches us that all of the treasures of wisdom and knowledge are hidden in Jesus Christ (Colossians 2:2-3)

Biblical Classical Education helps nurture the student’s relationship with Jesus Christ because we turn to Him and the Scriptures for wisdom and knowledge.

Students Learn to Own Their Education

As Biblical Classical teachers and students we are producers of our work. We do this via the Notebook Method. This is different than simply consuming what is taught. Also, it’s different than simply taking notes or filling out worksheets. We learn how to deepen our education by doing the following:

  • research
  • learning how to ask useful questions
  • spending time with God as they interact with His Word
  • learning what God says about matters of life
  • learning how God’s Word is relevant today
  • developing a Biblical worldview vocabulary
  • reasoning Biblically
  • connecting history in each subject to causes and their effects
  • learning what it means to think “governmentally”
  • tracing Liberty across the timeline of history
  • thinking internal to external
  • spotting the cause to effect of issues
  • comprehending Biblical principles according to context and jurisdictions
  • understanding how to apply Biblical principles to life
  • seeing the connections between Christian self-government and civics
  • living Christianly

Those aspects— and more— of Biblical Classical education equip us with training in righteousness. (2 Timothy 3:16, 17). That’s because in addition to head knowledge we develop heart knowledge.

Of course, comprehension and skill sets are also taught in subjects (math, grammar, spelling, etc.)

The Heart and Mind are Impacted

Biblical Classical Education reaches the heart and mind of the student because of God’s Word. It produces sober-minded scholars (1 Peter 5:8). We are transformed because our minds are renewed by the Word of God as we interact with Biblical principles (Romans 12:2). This helps us to conscientiously consider our personal response to Holy God throughout life.

The chief end goal is to know God, magnify His name in all the earth, enjoy Him forever, and bring Him Glory. His inspired Word produces that effect in us.

Inspired Education

The absolute Truths of God’s Word are inspiring. They are a key to helping us learn how to enjoy God forever. Inspired teaching and learning is needed to give our children and grandchildren a hope and a future.

Education is a Two-Way Street

As with any form of education, the teachers or parents can teach but it’s on the students to do the learning. Education is a two-way street. The students who choose to be teachable and who choose to be active and effective learners will benefit the most from this form of education. They are inspired as they interact with the lesson content and reflect and reason.

Supporting Your Role as the Parent

Most of Biblical Classical Community’s courses are taught by teachers who are trained in Biblical Classical Education. Our teachers are homeschooling parents, missionaries, and some are career teachers.

Courses reflect the uniqueness of each teacher because they design their own lessons. However, each teacher is required to teach according to the distinctives of Biblical Classical Education.

Biblical Classical Community’s teachers aren’t replacing parents. Instead, we are supporting you by helping you disciple your children through Christian education.

Biblical Classical Enhanced Courses

Teachers who haven’t had Biblical Classical Education training but have a solid Biblical worldview also offer courses at Biblical Classical Community. In this event, teamwork is involved with a trained Biblical Classical teacher who enhances the lesson content with Biblical Classical methods.

Non-Distracting Lessons

Biblical Classical Community’s self-paced, online courses are taught without modern video-based methods which are a distraction and shorten attention spans. There aren’t:

  • quick scene changes
  • animated backgrounds
  • bright colors

In Summary

Biblical Classical Education is historically Christian because for thousands of years Christians have had their minds renewed by the Word of God. It produces scholarly students who can think and reason Biblically. They become equipped for Christian living and being ambassadors of Christ. It’s historically American Christian because our Forefathers and Founding Fathers reasoned from the Truths of God’s Word, as documented in Teaching and Learning America’s Christian History by Rosalie J. Slater. Their education produced the freest nation on the earth. Biblical Classical Community teachers are here to support you in your homeschool journey of discipling your children through education.
