The Gulf of America
There are questions several individuals have about the renaming of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America. As a Biblical Classical mother and teacher I had some initially, too. Since this is a current concern regarding our nation. For this reason, this article offers reflection and reasoning questions to aid Christian homeschooling parents in a discussion with their students.

Biblical Classical Education helps individuals learn how to become thoughtful question-askers. This aids us in reasoning, learning, and navigating life.
Common Questions About the Gulf of America
-Who has the power to change the name of the Gulf of Mexico?
-Who has the power to change it on maps?
-Was the whole gulf renamed or just the water above land shelves that are not international waters?
From what I understand, EOs are not explicitly defined in the Constitution. They rest on historical practice, executive interpretations, and court decisions.

Here are some Reflection and Reasoning Questions to help aid individuals in their research, based on my studies of this matter:
Countries Naming Geographic Features
-Are countries allowed to call geographic features whatever they want within their own jurisdiction?
-Is it common for countries to name and rename features in their countries as they wish, especially when a new government wants to differentiate itself from past practices?
-What other countries have renamed many of their geographical features because of their nationalism (research India and Russia for examples).
-Is this a practice done throughout history? What are some examples?
-Was it a renaming of the whole gulf or was it a renaming the area above our land shelves as our territory? (Hint: research the World Court’s decision in 2023 regarding the decision about water about land shelves.)
-What are examples from the Bible that this is a common practice throughout history?
Who Officially Names Geographic Features?
-Outside each country, is there a formal body to decide on what things are called?
-The globalist United Nations has a body called “The Group of Experts on Geographical Locations.” Do countries have to follow its recommendations? Should they have to? Why or why not?
The History Behind the Name of the Gulf
-What is the history behind the naming of the gulf? Did Mexicans or Spaniards name it that? Why? Was there a reason for not calling it the Gulf of America to begin with, as it is a passage way *to* Mexico? What were those reasons?
-Why was it not named the Gulf of Cuba? What about Cuba?
Consideration of Jurisdictions
-What percentage of jurisdiction does Mexico have of the gulf?
-What percentage of jurisdiction does The U.S. have of the gulf?
-What percentage of jurisdiction does Cuba have of the gulf?
-Does it make sense that the country with most jurisdiction would have the gulf named after it?
-How does naming America’s underwater territory as America help strengthen our borders?
-How does putting legal protections in place to help us enforce any military actions or incursion in the future?
-Does the legal name Gulf of America allow for the United States of America to drill for oil off her shores?
The Gulf of America on Maps
-Do cartographies have to rename geographical locations on maps? Why or why not?
-Can signs or border walls be placed in the middle of the ocean? Are there legal reasons for identifying the new changes on the map?
-Is it essential to reflect these changes on the map for the sake of maritime traffic? How does this reflection help maritime traffic know when it is entering or leaving international waters?
-Is it essential to reflect the longitude and latitude on maps where underwater borders begin? Why or why not?
Notes of Interest Regarding the Gulf of America
-Mexico can and still does refer to the gulf as the Gulf of Mexico.
-America can refer to the gulf as the Gulf of America.
-All other nations see both names of the gulf on Google(R) Maps.
In Summary
It’s essential to help our students learn how to ask thoughtful and intelligent questions. Taking the time to to do that and research helps students set aside emotion-based thoughts and to look at matters objectively. As result, they learn to see the wisdom in naming America’s territory as the Gulf of America.
