Biblical Civics

Biblical Civics Biblical Classical Community

Oftentimes, when civics is taught the primary focus is on the study or philosophy of the privileges and duties of citizens. Those are aspects of civics classes, but there’s so much more to it. As Americans, it’s essential to learn and understand how Biblical civics is timelessly relevant to Liberty.

Listen to the article.

Civics and Liberty are God’s ideas. Therefore, learning about civics in relation to God is of primary importance. He is sovereign and His ways are intelligent and practical.

American Philosophy of Government

The American Philosophy of Government is based on the Biblical worldview. It came out of the Protestant Reformation in Europe and it was put into the founding documents of The Declaration of Independence and the United States Constitution.

Knowing the Work God Has Done for America

As Americans, it’s essential to know God and to know the works He has done.

There’s a lesson in Judges 2: 7 and 10 for individuals to learn. In the time of the elders who outlived Joshua, the Israelites didn’t know God or the work He had done for Israel. That’s because the previous generation failed to teach consecutive generations, which resulted in disaster.

“And the people served the Lord all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders that outlived Joshua, who had seen all the great works of the Lord, that he did for Israel . . . And also all that generation were gathered unto their fathers: and there arose another generation after them, which knew not the Lord, nor yet the works which he had done for Israel.” Judges 2:7, 10 (NKJV)

Part of the challenges that Americans face today is that we haven’t been taught about God’s hand in American civics. In Biblical Civics 101, Bill Burtness thoroughly teaches and challenges students’ thinking about God and His works in America. This course is for high school to adult.

The Purpose of Civil Government

Students learn how to compare and contrast the ideas of God being in control or civil government being in control. Some questions they learn to ask are:

  • Is the purpose of civil government for protection or control?
  • What happens when individuals move away from God?
  • Who is sovereign? The individual, God, or civil government? What exactly does sovereign mean?
  • What is it called when the individual is viewed as sovereign?
  • What does it mean for civil government to be viewed as sovereign?
  • What is it called when civil government is viewed as sovereign?
  • What is the Third Alternative to anarchy and tyrany?

Biblical Civics 101

  • how false ideas bring death and destruction

The Biblical Solution

“We are experiencing unprecedented political confusion.  There are all kinds of opinions, but no solutions coming forth from the world’s system.  The Bible has the solutions for every area of life, including American government and politics. Biblical Civics 101 teaches the solutions, to break through the confusion – and plant us on a solid trajectory of liberty, for our children’s future.  And it starts with the individual.” -Bill Burtness
